Equilibrium (SL & HL)
Dynamic Equilibrium
Definition: Rate of forward and reverse reactions are the same and concentrations of reactants and products remain constant
-
-
Le Chatelier's Principle
If a system at equilibrium is disturbed, the system shifts to counteract the disturbance
-
-
Equilibrium Calculations
Use ICE tables (Initial, Change, Equilibrium) to solve for:
-
-
-
K and Gibbs Energy (ΔG°)
-
-
ΔG° < 0 (negative)
lnK is positive, which means K > 1, and the reaction is spontaneous, so products are favoured at equilibrium.
ΔG° = 0
lnK is 0, which means K equals 1
ΔG° > 0 (positive)
lnK is negative, which means K < 1, and the reaction is non-spontaneous, so reactants are favoured at equilibrium.
