Qs: What were the main events of the Eucharistic Congress, 1932, and in what ways did the Congress contribute to Irish cultural identity
introduction
the eucharistic cogress is a week long event held in diffeerent countries throguhotu the world every two to four years to celebrate the eucharist
irish political leaders appealed to the vatican to recognise irelands independence right from the first dail in 1919 but it was only after the civil war ended thath the vatican developed relations with the irish free state
this as well as it being 1500 years after the arrival of st patricks to ireland eventually lead to ireland being chosen to host the 31st eucharistic congress in june 1932
ireland had just finished a turbulent period which led to the formation of two states,in each the majoritys religous identity strongly influenced the idnetity of the state itself ( irish free state = catholic identity,NI = protestant identity)

Decorating the streets
one may question the expense of 75,00 pounds in a time when 63,000 were unemployed to set up the event but efforst were put in o portray ireland in a positive light
irish familes decorated their homes with yellow + white bunting (the vatican colours) + put up pictures of religous icons + flags,flowers decerated doorways and windows
catholic organisations raised money to pay for he clean up + decorations of towns + villages throught the country as well as dublin

the weeks event
at 3pm on monday 20th june dev + other representatives of the gov greeted papal legate,cardinal lauri as they disembarked at dun laoghire
the irish air cops flew overhead in the formation of a cross followed by the Army no1 band playing the anthem inno pontificio
cardinal lauri was then escorted by hussars to an open top car accopmapnied by Dev + archbushop byrne driving by cheering crowds
Dev + cosgrave treated each other in a dignidied way,walking side by side at public functions

a mens mass was held on the 23rd june attended by almost 250,000 men
a womens mass was held the following day attended by 200,000 woman
and the childrens mass was held on the 5th attended by 100,000 chilren
a garden party was held in blackrock college were up to 14,000 guests were invited

the mass was said by archbishop michael curley + during the consecration of the eucharist st patricks bell was rung a symbol of early christian ireland
john mccormack snag the hymn panis angelicus during the mass,he was awareded a number of church titles + made a papal count in 1928
a memeorable moment from the mass was a message from pope pius XI,broadcasted from the vatican as the ceremoney began - first tie for many irish catholics hearing his voice

although they disagreed with catholic teaching,many southern protestants tolerated it + were open minded

around 500 loyalists gathered outside the central train station in belfast with bottels + other missiles to attck catholics returing from the congress
impact
congress had a profound impact on"it aided the process of healing" regarding old civil war animocities
it provided evidence of the close relationship between the church and the state + independent ireland and irish national identity

it also seemed to confirm the long helf belief that the free state was catholic state "home rule is rome rule"
it also reminded people of early christian ireland,before the british conquest reflec4ted in symbols such as st patricks bell + artwork along with efforts made to imprve irish lanugage by successive governments
