Mechanisms
rotary motions mechanims
friction drive
wheel is called the primary drive wheel. When it moves it turns or drives the output wheel causing it move as well
-
The output wheel rotates in the opposite direction to the primary
wheel. If we use more than two wheels, each one rotates in the opposite direction to the one next to it
Uses: in industry — to make metal sheets, rolls of paper or other thin materials Video players use this system to move the video tape
Pulleys with belts
-
-
-
The two pulleys land the two axles rotate the same direction
The rauo between the rotation velocities of the pulleys, the gear
ratio, is the same as in friction drives
Uses: in industrial machines, car engines, washing machines, drills
-
Worm gear
This is a screw that moves a helical cogwheel which is set perpendicular to the screw
Each time the screw rotates the gear moves forward as many teeth as grooves in the screw (normally a small number, I, 2 or 3)
This is used to reduce velocity as well as serving as a braking system
uses: in lap counter mechanisms, gear reduction systems, guitar
turning keys, windscreen wipers
-
-
Gear train
The rotary motion of the first wheel 1 drives the second wheel 2
• Wheel 3 rotates at the same time as wheel 2 and drives wheel 4
• When there are two wheels, each connected geared wheel rotates
in the opposite direction to its partner.
Uses: in machine tools, in robotics, in the gearbox of motor vehicles, in some kitchen appliances (mixer, juicer, liquidiser)

Linear motion mechanisms
-
Fixed pulleys
A fixed pulley is a wheel that has a groove for a rope, cham or belt to go round
it rotates around an axle that ls fixed to an immobile surface
-
-
Compound pulleys
This is a set of fixed and moveable pulleys, often called a block and tackle.
Mechanisms are devices that transmit and convert forces and motions from a driving force (input) to an output element. They enable us to carry out certain tasks with greater comfort and less effort.
