Chapter1:
Explore the network
1.Network Connect Us
Human Network:
Global communities can communicate and collaborate instantly.
2.Network Component
a)
Host Roles:
Computers that provide information to end devices.
Example:
Email, Web, File servers
b)
Peer-to-Peer:
Computers that send requests to retrieve information from server.
c)
End devices:
Where a message originates from or where it is recieved.Data originates with an end device, flows throught the network, and arrives at an end devices.
d)
Intermediary Network Devices:
Interconnects end devices, manage data flow.
Example:
switch, wireless acces points, routers, and firewalls.
regenerate and retransmit signals, maintain pathways (Routing), notify failures.
3.Network Media
a)
Copper cable:
Uses electrical impulses
b)
Fiber-optic:
Uses pulses of light
c)
Wireless:
Uses electromagnetic waves
4.Network Topology Diagrams
b)
Logical topology:
Shows ports, addressing, and data flow paths.
a)
Physical topology:
Shows the actual location devices and cables.
c)
Analogy:
Street Maps vs Traffic Flow Map.
5.Types of Networks
a)
Local Area Network (LAN):
Small (Home,Office), Single Organization, High-speed bandwidth.
b)
Wide Area Network (WAN):
Wide (City,Country), Multiple Service Providers, Slower speed links.
a)
Small Home:
Connect a few computers to each other and the Internet.
b)
Small Office \ Home Office (SOHO):
enables computer within a home or remote office to connect to a corporate network.
c)
Medium to Large Networks:
Many location with hundreds or thousands of interconnected computer.
d)
World Wide:
Connects hundreds of millions of computer world-wide such as the internet.
