Chapter 11
Choosing the right path (DMAIC vs DMADV)
DMAIC is the standard method used when a business already has a process but it isnt working well enough
DMADV is used for "Design for Six SIgma" which means you are either creating a new product or replacing a process that is too broken to fix
While they have different goals, both methods want to improve quality, save money, and make customers happier
Teams usually know which one to pick at the start, but they can switch paths if they realize during the project that the old process is obsolete
Both methods break down a giant project into smaller, manageable bites so the team doesnt get overwhelmed
Defining the problem and measuring results
In the define phase, the team names the problem, set goals, and identifies who the stakeholders or bosses are
They create a project charter, which is a short document that acts as a summary and a contract for the teams work
The measure phase is when the team gathers data to see how the process is actually performing right now
measuring can be the hardest part because it involves digging through digital records or even counting things by hand
Playing Detective in the Analyze Phase
The Analyze phase is the "detective work" where teams look for the root cause of why errors are happening
Teams use math and graphical tools to separate the most important issues from the minor ones
It is not enough to just guess the team must prove their theories with data before they are allowed to move on
This phase often involves a tollgate review where bosses must approve the findings before the team starts making changes
Improving a process or designing a new one
In the improve phase of DMAIC the team brainstorms solutions and picks the most effective ones to test
They often run a pilot which is a small-scale trial to see if the fix works in the real world before rolling it out to everyone
In the design phase of DMADV, the team actually builds the new process or software according to the customers needs
teams must be careful to pick solutions that aren't too expensive or so disruptive that they cause more problems than they solve
This is the most active stage where equipment is installed, staff are trained, and new rules are put into place
Holding the line with control and verify
The control phase (DMAIC) is about creating "monitors" to make sure the process stays improved and doesn't slide back into old habits
In the verify phase (DMADV) the team hands over the new, finished product to the process owner for daily use
Teams create a control plan a set of easy to follow instructions that tells regular workers how to spot and fix problems on their own
The prokect officiallt ends with a reflection meeting to celebrate the win and talk about what the team learned
the final goal is to make quality part of the daily culture so the business never stops looking for ways to get better
