In Europe many blamed the jews for the balck death - but there were few jews in England as they had been expelled in the 13th Century
Prevention
priest recommended prayer, fasting, going on a pilgrimage and self flagellation

Local Authorities put in place laws to stop people moving around, people that moved to an area had to be isolated for 40 days, they considered banning church services, they stopped cleaning the streets to drive away the miasma
these were ineffective as they actually had little power. The rich still moved around and the churches continued as normal
Treatment
Physicians tried lots - bleeding, purging, strong smelling herbs or lighting a fire and boiling vinegar to drive away the bad smell
