How it works When the VIX is low (around 12-15): Markets are calm, investors feel confident
When the VIX is high (above 30): Markets are turbulent, investors expect big swings
What it actually measures: The VIX looks at options prices on the S&P 500. When investors buy lots of insurance (options) against market drops, those options get expensive - and the VIX rises. It's literally measuring the cost of portfolio insurance
