Government
Compromise of 1877: senate and house met together, Democrats agreed to vote for Republican candidate if government releases military troops from all southern states
Jim Crow : Laws passed against blacks, read to vote, pay to vote, etc

Tweed Ring: used a political machine (corruption in business and politics) to gain uncanny wealth, using bribery, fraudulent elections, and raising the taxes of protesters.
Labor Unions
Knights of labor : first national labor union created, they fought for short 8 hour work days, equal pay for women, and abolition of child labor. This group was filled with skilled and unskilled worker.
The National Labor Union : this group pulled together all skilled workers. The groups consisted of farmer and labor workers. As they fought they won over the 8 hour work day. This was the first major national federation that was focused on uniting all labor union.
American Federation of Labor (AFL) the AFL was a group focused specifically on smaller businesses. Samuel Gompers was the head of the AFL, they fought for better hours, safer environments, and more money.
