Winston wakes up in a white, windowless room
The lights are always on and he does not know the time or day
He is hungry and terrified, waiting for torture
He remembers being in a prison cell with other prisoners
Party members are silent and afraid, while prole criminals are noisy and aggressive
Winston meets some prisoners he knows
Ampleforth is arrested because he kept the word "God" in a poem
He is taken to room 101
Parsons is arrested because his daughter reported him for speaking against Big Brother in his sleep
Winston sees a starving prisoner begging not to go to Room 101
Everyone is terrified of that place
O'Brien finally enters the room
Winston realizes O'Brien has always been part of the Party and has betrayed him
Winston is beaten badly and tortured many times
The Party forces Winston to confess to many crimes, even ones he never committed
He confesses because it is easier than resisiting pain
O'Brien explains that Winston is not there to be punished but to be "cured"
O'Brien tries to convince Winston that reality exists only in the mind of the Party
He uses torture to force Winston to say that two plus two can equal five
Winston slowly begins to doubt his own memories and beliefes

O'Brien answers that everyone already knows what is inside it
Winston falls asleep, knowing worse torture is coming
