Appointment process
Candidates are chosen based on merit via a competition process that involves advertising vacancies, shortlisting, and interviews.
Take an online test on the judicial appointments website checking eligibility, good character and suitability.

When selected by the JAC, appointments for various judicial roles are officially made by the King on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor.
Role of the JAC
They recommend candidates for judicial roles up to and including the High Court as well as non-legal positions for specialist tribunals with UK-wide powers.
They select candidates: solely on merit, with good character, and have regard to need to encourage diversity in range of persons available for judicial selection.
They run mock assessments and you can volunteer as a mock candidate to gain experience in the selection process.

4 Selection Day = Shortlisted candidates attend interview + for entry level roles, a role-play exercise.
5 Statutory consultations: before making recommendation, JAC consults with senior judges familiar with candidate.

Qualifications

Must be solictor, barrister or Fellow of Charted Institute of Legal Executives.
7 years for Circuit Judge, Upper Tribunal + higher-level positions.
Must be a citizen of the UK, Republic of Ireland or Commonwealth country.
Strict background checks on professional conduct, financial and criminal history.
