The Boston Matrix is named after the Boston consultancy firm that originally made this design and is mainly used as a way or businesses to see where their products are and what to do about them
Advanatages

Can identify what needs to be purged from the business, wants needs to be maintained and what needs to be spent on products.

Disadvantages
Not useful for all products, EG: government contractors would not fit neatly into the matrix

Dogs
Low market share in a low growth market. Usually the worst of the four as it means that there is a lack of opportunity to grow sales of the product

Rising Stars
High market share in a high growth market. Usually future cash cows, these products dominate their high growth markets with lots of revenue

Cash Cow
High market share in a low growth market. These are the products that essentially are free money for the business with low maintenance
Advantages
Due to existing in a low growth market, they are unlikely to face any new compititors

Market is still affected by new developments in technology and other factors which could turn it into a dog
