“Cheap speech has fueled candidate-centered politics and candidate demagoguery in two distinct ways. To begin with, as Donald Trump’s electoral success has shown, candidates and elected officials may now communicate directly to voters and others on social media. Not only can they reach an audience of millions at any time with no notice; the statements they make, no longer mediated by journalists, are subject to little resistance and no fact checking. Before his account was suspended, Trump could tweet a falsehood and journalists and others could fact-check it in a separate tweet, post, or article, but Trump’s tweet stood on its own, able to be shared without context. Those predisposed to believe Trump were likely to believe him and reject any fact checking.”(chapter 2)
