7.1 Searching the Literature
Purpose: Searching allows you to identify the information of others and incorporate those relevant details into your own scientific communication
Application: You use these search skills to find data for lab reports, research papers, or review articles
Goal: Scientific research is built on documented knowledge
7.2 Scientific Reference Databases
Google Scholar: A free site that indexes the full text of peer-reviewed online journals from major scholarly publishers
MEDLINE: International in scope, this database covers more than 4,000 journal titles in basic biomedical research and clinical sciences
PubMed: Comprises of over 20 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books
Web of Science: Provides web access to the Science Citation Index Expanded, covering over 6,300 international journals
7.3 Source Material
Tertiary Sources: Resources that compile and reorganize information, such as textbooks, manuals, and Wikipedia
Search Terms: Use keywords the represent the main concepts of your topic rather than typing entire research questions
Secondary Sources: Texts like review articles or commentaries that analyze and discuss the information provided by primary sources
Boolean Operators: Use "and" to require both terms in a search or "or" to expand the search to include either term
Primary Sources: Original, peer-reviewed publications where a scientist's new data and theories are reported for the first time
Wildcards (
): Use truncation at the end of a root word to find variable examples, such as "univers
" for university or universe
7.4 Managing Sources
Organization: Use references managing computer programs like EndNote, Mendeley, or Zotero to organize and keep track of your citations
Verification: Always verify your final references against the original document to prevent false representation of the information
