        'umbrella' - forceful and broken - damaged by him - vulnerability/exposed
        Hyper-feminine clothing - symbol of a woman with no identity or voice only focusing on her clothing - material used for masculine desire - objectification, lack of female identity
        Binary app of red and white - red is evil and predatorily, white is pure and vulnerable - non-consensual, toxic masculinity
      - 'XR2 late night fights a trial once with Cardiff Youth' - 'XR2' - super up ford fiesta - metaphorically represents Joseph - facade of masculinity/trying to be something for attention
        Fighting - masculinity, violence - inevitable end
        Criminal connotations - life led to crime - only taken to court once - men like him get away with behaviour
        Retrospect - Sheers hopes for a change from toxic masculinity cycle
        All that remains of him is a mocking memory - lack of meaning and identity, lack of purpose and substance
      - 'Joseph Jones' - Common Welsh surname - typical rep of masculinity, anonymous - could be anyone and everyone - universal behaviour. Biblical as the father of religion - toxic masculinity has existed since beginning of time
        Staggering lines mimicking his significance and value becoming less valued

        Voyeur - Reader is placed in the position of a voyeur by Sheers purposefully to make them uncomfortable and question the treatment of women and pain of relationships

        Enduring relationship but also damaged
        Shorter last line - memory will forever be there - permanent affect on future life
        'loving scar' - oxymoron - made out of love but caused her physical pain and his emotional pain
      - 'That mark upon your back is finally fading in the way our memory will' - Syntactical placement draws reader to the focus of the poem, both participated but she has the scar - double standards - sex is derogatory for women but celebratory for men - women can also get pregnant
        Alliteration of 'f'f - narrator wants it to go to lessen his guilt of damaging her
        Recognises they will not last/desire for it to end to feel better - too painful to stay together
      - 'I trace them now and feel the disturbance again. The still waters of your skin broken, the volte engaging' - Still together - verb is delicate and respectful - he is reconsidering in retrospect but still bothers him that she has been marked
        Metaphor disturbs the peace - scar has caused imperfection - consequences of lust - ripple effect
        Reference to 'volte' suggests turn or thrust - sexual encounter

        Hunzvi was feared for his militant tactics and justified the violence perpetrated in land seizures and was charged with embezzlement of 45 million from the war veteran funds

      - 'He wears his power like an aftershave, so thick the women about him flounder in it' - Simile shows his arrogance that lingers like his influence and power are always there
        His power is also a conscious application or performance rather than a given thing - he is trying to attract women and assert dominance suggesting women are attracted to artificial qualities - weak and inferior rep (Joseph Jones)
        'thick' - oppressive and suffocating power
        'flounder' evokes image of being overwhelmed or drowning - vulnerability and Hunzvi's control over them
      - 'burned workers' homes, scorched huts like cauterised wounds, the men who cradle the fruit of their bruises' - Lexical field of fire and burning links to violent attacks, enjambment of listing of violence shows the on going and unjustified crimes
        'Scorched huts' - association with 'scorched earth' - military policy of destruction - victims are left destitute and murdered - extreme violence
        Simile - burnt to stop cell growth - permanent mark of crossing him - unhealed trauma rather than cleansing
        'cradle' - connotes tenderness and protection but is used for bruises creating a paradox - men's childlike vulnerability or forced dependency
        'fruit of their bruises' - oxymoron contrasts idea of positive harvest with negative result of violence - left with painful damaged outcomes of their suffering
      - 'lightly touching her leg where he laid his hand on her thigh...washing him away with one slow blink- - Invasive intimacy and assertion of power - the touch signifies entitlement and superiority - it was unwanted but accepted it due to patriarchal dictatorship
        Men are inherently derogatory and don't ask for consent
        End focuses on the woman - Sheers demonstrating the effect his futile power has on society, in particular women
        She is trying to dismiss him and his perceived power to try and remove the memory and impact of him
