In the 1600s and 1700s, the East India Company had set up trading posts in India, as had other European countries such as the Dutch and French. In the mid-1700s, British East India Company officials such as Robert Clive gained more and more power by trade, tax collection and military victories such as the 1757 Battle of Plassey. Another key person was Warren Hastings, who became Governor General of the East India Company, but was also put on trial for corruption. Partly as a result of this, the British Parliament assumed control of the East India Company in 1784.
