MATERIALS - Coggle Diagram
MATERIALS
sustance that has been prepared for making different types of products
RAW MATERIALS
: they are substances that are extracted directly from natural objects.
they are transformed by phisical or chemical process (chemical if it changes the state of the material physical if it doesn't)
manufactured good is any obiect created by humans to satisfy
their needs and improve their standard of living
PROCESS
1
.we get the raw materials from nature
2
.we process them to make materials
3
.we make goods with these materials
2.
3.
1.
they can be made of different materials
the most common ones
wood
metals
plastic
textiles
stone
ceramics
PROPERTIES
ELECTRICAL
: how the material reacst to electricity.
CONDUCTIVITY:
Some materials conduct ( allow something
to pass through it or transmit it) electricity.
ELECTRICAL INSULATION
: Some materials don't conduct electricity.
TERMAL
CONDUCTIVITY
the material conducts heat.
EXPANSION/CONTRACTION
the material contracts os expands at high temperatures.
FUSIBILITY
the material goes from solid to liquid at high temperatures.
WELDING
the materials can be used to weld two or more pieces together.
ACOUSTIC
CONDUCTIVITY
: capacity of materials to transmit sound.
INSULATORS
: materials that don't conduct sound well.
MAGNETIC
MAGNETISM
: some materials atract other metals.
OPTICAL
OPAQUE
: light can't pass through them.
TRANSLUCENT
: these materials allow light trough them, but it doesen't allow obejects to be clearly seen trough them.
TRANSPARENT
: light can pass trough them and you can clearly see objects.
MECHANICAL
depends on the type of force that acts upon them
ELASTICITY
: allows the material to return to it's original form after a
force that has changed its shape is removed.
PLASTICITY
: allows it to be permanently deformed.
MALLEABILITY
: allows a material to be spread into sheets or films.
DUCTILITY
: allows a material to be formed into filaments, or wires.
HARDNESS
A hard matenal is not easilv scratched bv another matenal
TOUGHNESS
: it's the resistance to breaking that a material shows.
BITTERNESS
: when the material breaks easily.
OTHERS
DENSITY
: it's the relationship between the mass of an obiect and its
volume.
POROSITY
: Some materials can absorb or release liquids or gases.
PERMEABILITY
: Some materials allow water or other liquids to filter through them.
IMPERMEABILITY
: some materials don't allow water or other liquids to filter through
them.
CHEMICAL
when the composition changes
OXIDATION
: this happens when a material reacts with oxygen in the air or water.
ecological
Materials
are classified according to the impact they have on the environment
Some matenals come from renewable raw materials. These raw
materials can be regenerated
