Chapter 6: Boycott & The Year of Sorrow
Boycott Begins: Recognizing the gradual growth of Islam, Quraysh apply sanctions to isolate Banu Hashim.
Moving forward, we will not marry our sons to them and we will not accept their daughters.
No one will buy from them nor sell to them.
No one will socialize with them nor accept invitations from them.
The mandate was hung in the Kaabah.
Test of Tribal Loyalty
Banu Hashim was feeling uncomfortable suffering for the sake of the Prophet SAW, when a number of them were kuffar,
Abu Talib reminded them of their noble heritage and urged them to protect the Prophet SAW for the sake of the tribe.
O Banu Hashim, you are the children of Abdul Muttalib. The crown jewel of Quraysh.
The caretakers of the Haram.
The keepers of the well of Zamzam.
And hosts of the Hujjaj.
If we allow this door to be opened once, where they get there hands on one of the sons of Banu Hashim, the grandson of Abdul Muttalib, then this door will never be closed.
All agreed to protect Muhammad SAW except for Abu Lahab.
Boycott: Banu Hashim faced 3 ears of difficulty and hardship.
Quraysh banned Banu Hashim from the marketplace.
Any merchants coming into town would be blocked, their inventory bought, and sent out. Full humanitarian blockage.
Abu Talib would nightly switch the bed of the Prophet SAW with others with the fear of assassination.
Extreme malnutrition and hunger broke out to the point that cries of children would be heard outside the valley.
Sa'ad ibn Abi Waqas stood in solidarity with Banu Hashim. "I was so insanely hungry that one night in the state of intense hunger, I stepped on something soft that felt organic and edible. I picked it up and put it in my mouth, ate it, swallowed it, and until today I have no idea what I ate."
Some sympathetic people would sneak in food and supplies on their camels. Abu Jahl personally patrolled and watched out for the.
The Prophet SAW would use every hajj season and poetry fest to talk to each tribe to find an alternative to Makkah.
Boycott Ends: Hisham ibn 'Amr (respected, relation to Abdul Muttalib) leads a movement of to end the mandate.
Hisham talked to leaders with relations to Banu Hashim and banked on their sympathy and honor, slowly forming a coalition.
The "coalition" planned to disrupt and own a Qurayshi meeting to presure the leaders.
Miracle: Allah sent termites to either eat the entire document except "بسم الله" (ibn Hisham) OR eat the name of Allah SWT (ibn Uqba). "بسم الله" dissociated from oppression.
The Prophet SAW informed Abu Talib of the miracle despite not laying eyes on it himself (Proof).
Abu Talib strikes a deal with the Quraysh with full faith in his nephew.
My nephew has informed me that Allah has nothing to do with this mandate of oppression.
The sign of that is that all mention of his name is removed, leaving behind only your evil conditions.
If what my nephew says is true, then it is time to end this blockade.
But if what he says is a lie, we will hand him over to you right now (SADIQUL AMIN, not a risk).
Quraysh persisted in their lies even after seeing the miracle, but Hisham and his group backed up Abu Talib and the Mandate was ended by a majority vote.
Death of Abu Talib (ibn Ishaaq: 9th-10th year)
While Abu Talib was on his death bed the Prophet SAW pleaded that he recite the shahada so that he would have a case to fight on the Day of Judgement.
Abu Jahl, who was there with Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah, discouraged Abu Talib form taking shahada.
"Will you turn your back on the legacy of Abu Muttalib?!"
Abu Talib died with the words: "I die on the way of Abdul Muttalib."
The Prophet SAW kept seeking forgiveness for Abu Talib until ayyat came down comforting him and prohibiting dua for disbeliever who passed.
"You do not guide who you love, Allah guides who He wills."
"It is not befitting for a Prophet and those who believe that they seek forgiveness for the pagans even if they are from family, after it is has become clear to them that they are from the people of the Blaze" (Surah Tawbah).
After Abu Talib's death, the Prophet SAW lost all political protection and was harassed and humiliated by Quraysh.
While praying in front of the Kaaba, Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'eet threw the innards of a camel onto the Prophet SAW, as abu Jahl and others laughed.
Only after Fatimah came running and scraped it off his back did he get up from prostration.
The Prophet SAW prayed against the seven individuals who insulted prayer and made his daughter cry.
O Allah, I task you to take revenge on my behalf from Quraysh. x3
O Allah, I put You upon Abu Jahl, and on Utbah ibn Abi Abee'a, Wa Shaybah ibn Abi Abee'ah, Wa Walid ibn Utba, wa Umayyah ibn Khalaf, wa Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'eed (in another narration) wa Walid ibn Ammara/Ammara ibn Walid .
All seven were seen by ibn Masood dead and discarded in the wells of Badr.
Death of Khadijah RA (within 3 days of Abu Talib's death - Bayhaqi. Others say 30.)
The Prophet SAW honored Khadijah RA and respected her every day after her passing.
Praising and Reminiscing her RA
Aisha RA says: "The way the Prophet SAW would talk about Khadijah RA was as if there was no woman in the world but her."
Prophet SAW used to say, "She was what she was."
Honoring her Friends RA
Aisha RA: Sometimes the Prophet SAW would recieve a gift or slaughter a sheep, and he would take the best parts and have it sent to the friends of Khadijah RA.
He would say, "She used to love Khadijah, give it to her."
Making Dua and Istighfaar for her RA
The Prophet SAW would not get tired of making istighfar and dua for her and praising her.
Seeing her Jewelry RA
Zaynab bint Muhammad RA was in Makkah because she had a family and husband (Abul 'Aas) who she loved but was not Muslim in Makkah.
Abul 'Aas was forced to participate in the battle of Badr and was taken prisoner by the Muslims.
Zaynab RA sent the jewelry of Khadijah RA as ransom money for her husband.
RasulUllah SAW became emotionally overwhelmed (فرق رقا شديدا) (with the memory of Khadija).
He SAW went out to where the prisoners were being held and ASKED them, "If you can find it within yourself to free Abdul 'Aas, I'd appreciate it," so he was released.
"إني قد رزقت حبهها"
