Blackness, especially in America, has been treated as different caricatures in the media. Ever since the proliferation of print media, stereotypes of the mammy, the dandy, the lazy slave, and generally exaggerated movements or speech. These stereotypes were furthered by minstrel shows and vaudeville, thanks to a growing entertainment sector under capitalism. Much of early film was inspired by vaudeville, and these stereotypes remained in cinema long after, and to some degree still to this day.
