triumvirate

The First Triumvirate was made up of Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus.
The Second Triumvirate included Octavian (later Augustus), Mark Antony, and Lepidus.
Julius Caesar
a powerful Roman general and leader who expanded Rome’s territory, helped end the Roman Republic, and became dictator before being assassinated.
He gave land to the poor, created jobs, reformed the government and calendar, and increased rights for people in Roman provinces.
He was assassinated in 44 BCE by senators who feared he was becoming too powerful and might end the Republic.
augustus
a title meaning “the revered one” or “honored one,” used by Octavian when he became the first emperor of Rome.
Augustus strengthened Rome by creating a stable government, improving the army and taxes, building public works, and starting a long period of peace called the Pax Romana.

Gracchus Brothers
Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus were Roman brothers who tried to help poor plebeians by passing land and reform laws, but were opposed by the Senate and were both killed for their efforts.

General Sulla
Sulla was a Roman general who used the army to take control of Rome, became dictator, and showed how military power could overpower the Roman Republic’s government.
Battle of Actium 31 BCE
A naval battle where Octavian defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra, giving him control of Rome and leading to the end of the Roman Republic.
