Session 8: City Leadership & Business Opportunities
"Sustainable Cities: creating urban environments of the future"
Childs. M (2013), The Guardian, 29 July.
What changes are needed in the organisation and management of resource use to make cities better places to live and what role does business have in this?
Autonomy
Cities need high levels of autonomy so they can build on their uniqueness and grow.
More autonomous cities lead to economic growth - city and country.
Giving cities more autonomy isn't bad; but the question is of who holds the power and how it is used?
For big businesses a more complex regulatory environment may reduce efficiency but it could also allow smaller local companies to flourish
Businesses may need to develop good relationships with their local cities and recognise the need to adapt to their local environment.
Participation
Who holds power in a city is vital
If businesses are in power, they need to realise that they need to improve wellbeing in city not just benefit them.
Good solution is participatory decision-making and participatory budgeting.
Involve affected communities in making the decisions themselves.
Give a voice to the marginalised.
Sharing
Need business models that help build communities that allow local people to manage assets from energy to parks to bikes.
Need to utilise digital revolution to bring people together not segment them.
Businesses need to focus on social aspects apart from profit.
Links into Corporate Social Responsibility.
Businesses need to take on a different role than profit-maximisers.
