- - - - Petrarch was a very famous Italian poet in the 1300s.
        Wrote poems for and about a woman called Laura, whom he worshipped but with whom he never actually had a relationship.
        These poems were sonnets and made the sonnet form famous.
        Falling in love at first sight, Petrarchan would be haunted by her beauty for the rest of his life.
        When she died, someone opened her tomb and discovered inside it a box containing a medal representing a woman ripping at her heart, and under that, a sonnet by Petrarch.
        Typical of courtly love genre- man worships and longs for a woman who can never be his (married). The man becomes a better man by serving someone so pure.
- - - - Both Wyatt and Shakespeare appear devoted to the person they are writing about contextually.
        Both use simple, direct and use mainly monosyllabic words to get their point across.
        Both sonnet form.
        Wyatt had a forbidden love affair with Boleyn, while Shakespeare rumoured to be bisexual and possibly had an affair with his patron.
    - - Different rhyme schemes show how the poems were written at different points in the English sonnet's development.
        Shakespeare focuses on idealised, purity of love, Wyatt portrays love as a fruitless venture.
        Shakespeare writes more generally about an abstract idea of love while Wyatt writes about a specific pursuit of a woman.
        Shakespeare writes the love is an 'ever-fixed mark' and 'not Time's fool'. Contrastingly, the speaker in Wyatt's poem suffers but desists.
        Wyatt's poem has sexual undertones whereas Shakespeare's poem equates love with 'the marriage of two minds'; love in Sonnet 116 is primarily mental or spiritual.
  - - - Both texts centre on a man obsessively pursuing a woman who is ultimately out of reach- desire becomes self-destructive rather than fulfilling.
        Both Wyatt and Gatsby are trapped by longing.
        Both the deer and Daisy Buchanan are symbols rather than individuals- doe represents courtly desire and Daisy symbolises wealth and status- reflects male projection rather than mutual relationships.
        Wyatt critiques Tudor court power structures, Fitzgerald critiques capitalist, class-based America. In both, love is constrained by social authority and status.
    - - Outcome of pursuit- Wyatt's speaker accepts defeat, recognises futility of the chase whereas Gatsby refuses to let go. Wyatt promotes restraint, Fitzgerald exposes dangerous idealism.
        The doe is silent and owned, marked as belonging to another whereas Daisy has some agency but is morally weak, choosing comfort over love.
