What needs to be done to improve the psychological and medical impact, caused by the flight, on both patients and the team involved in helicopter emergency medical responses?
Patients
Medical
-
If the helicopter actually has the equipment needed to react to any situation the patient may find themselves in - whether all impacts are accounted for
-
Higher blood pressure and heart rate, particularly take-off and landing which could worsen their condition
Being exposed to vibrations, cold temperatures, and high noise levels can worsen conditions such as hypothermia
Rapid changes in speed during take off, landing, and manoeuvring can put stress on the cardiovascular system
In-flight complications: risk of inadvertent extubation, dislodgement of IV lines, or deterioration of their condition during the flight
There is an increased risk of mortality, cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, or serious arrhythmias compared to other modes of transport, particularly if not managed by a highly specialized team
