ENGLISH GRAMMAR: COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES
SHORT ADJECTIVES (1 Syllable)
Rule: Add -er for comparative and -est for superlative.
Old → Older than → The oldest
Late (ends in -e) → Later than → The latest
Tall → Taller than → The tallest
Small → Smaller than → The smallest
Big (double consonant) → Bigger than → The biggest
IRREGULAR FORMS
Rule: These words change completely.
Far → Farther/Further than → The farthest/furthest
Little → Less than → The least
Bad → Worse than → The worst
Good → Better than → The best
QUICK FORMULAS
Relative Superlative: [A] + verb + THE + adjective-EST
Example: Mount Everest is the highest mountain
Equality: AS + adjective + AS
Example: I am as tall as you
Comparison: [A] + verb + adjective-ER + THAN + [B]
Example: Italy is warmer than England
LONG ADJECTIVES (2+ Syllables)
Rule: Use more or the most before the adjective. Do NOT change the ending.
Beautiful → More beautiful than → The most beautiful
Famous → More famous than → The most famous
Expensive → More expensive than → The most expensive
Interesting → More interesting than → The most interesting
ADJECTIVES ENDING IN "-Y"
Rule: Change -y to -ier or -iest.
Easy → Easier than → The easiest
Busy → Busier than → The busiest
Happy → Happier than → The happiest
Funny → Funnier than → The funniest
