Reflecting on the Intersections of SEL and Education Justice
Connection to Experience
When I was in public school, SEL instruction primarily focused on self-esteem, which I do think was an important topic, but was very limited as I look back as an adult. When I attended faith-based schools, religious lessons were usually where SEL connections happened but I remember meaningful lessons on compassion, environmental stewardship & social justice.
What helped me find a sense of belonging as a young person was when I had teachers that expressed an authentic interest in my thoughts, ideas, and who I was as a person. This webinar emphasized the importance of relationship-building, authenticity, and intentionality.
Justice-Oriented SEL
What does it look like?
understands what oppression looks like and helps students recognize it
leans into power of community
rooted in justice, joy, & liberation
responsive, not reactive
counselors, not police in schools
authenticity & intentionality within classroom spaces
How can it address inequity?
it is central to liberation work
it recognizes who is being centered and who isn't
amplifies BIPOC voices
Practical Implications
How to implement?
Must think outside the curriculum (curriculum updates alone will not lead to sustained change)
build authentic relationships with students, families, and the community
teach a culturally responsive curriculum
create a culture of appreciation (asset-based approach)
create opportunities for young people to share & be heard (listening partnerships)
create space for laughter & play
Challenges/solutions?
funding! As one panelist mentioned, a budget is a moral document and schools are not always equitably resourced
how to codify solutions for equity into policy?
challenges status quo/current ed system is antiquated & inequitable
need legislative language that aligns with vision
need advocates within community leadership
