how did the US achieve a successful moon landing in 1969 and what was its national and international significance for the US (2019)
introduction
-
the US was going through its greatest economic boom, techongoly was advanced + they belived they were technoglocially supererior
-
in 1969 the US succesfully had the first man on the moon -neil armstrong famously saying " thats one small step for man,one giant leap for mankind"
-
space race (motivation)
-
The USSR achieved putting the worlds first satellite into orbit (sputnik in 1957) and putting the first human into space (yuri gargin in 1961)
this led many americans and non americnas to fear that the USSR had the upper hand in the space race
-
the USs interational repuatation as the dominat superpower and the viabillity of the capitalist system were at stake (this led to a space race)
-
NASA
after sputnik was successfully put into space by the USSR the US attempted to send a rocket into space - the vanguard
but this was a destoryed by an explosion on its launch pad (flopnik + kaputnik - propaganda failures)

-
NASA forced president JFK to commit the US to landing a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s - "before this decade is out"
apollo programme
-
this was the objectve of the project mercury programme (1959-1963) + it was 6,1 man spaceflights involving astrounts orbaitng the earth
-
P.G was intended to a) work out how to conduct extra curricular activites (spacewalks) b) learn hot to conduct docking procedures between spacecrafts C) prove that humans can survive for long peridos in a weightless environement

problems
-
firstly there were problems with navigational and communication tasks meaning the crew had a very heavy workload
-
failure at any of these stages would mean at best aborting the misson and at worst the loss of all three astronauts
not everything went to plan during the apollo programme but it "Created a huge number of new companies and thousands of new jobs" - JFK
-
however in 1968 after saftey features were installed Apollo 8 carried 3 astronauts into orbit around the Moon + reutrend safely to earth
in 1970 disaster was avoided in the Apollo 13 mission when a fuel tank in the C.M expolded and the 3 astrounats imporvide and took refuge in the L.M
