-
The Hardy Weinberg equation- 2pq represents the expected frequency of the heterozygous frequency of the heterozygous genotype
allele and genotype frequencies in the population will remain constant from generation to generation describes a population in the Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium
-
-
-
Microevolution-Evolutionary change below the species level; change in the allele frequencies in a population over generations.
Adaptations- inherited characteristics of organisms that enhance their survival and reproduction in a specific environments
Natural selection- Process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than do other individuals during these traits
artificial selection-Humans have modified other species over many generations by selecting and breeding individuals that possess desired traits
Vestigial Structures-a feature of an organism that is a historical remnant of a structure that served a function in the organisms ancestor
evolution tree-A branching diagram that reflects a hypothesis about evolutionary relationship among groups of organisms
-
-
-
Species accumulate differences from their ancestors as they adapt to different environments over many generations
-
While different in some ways, these species share many similar features descended form a common ancestor
-
Inference#1- Individuals whose inherited traits give them a higher probability of surviving and reproducing in a given environmental tend to leave more offspring than do other individuals
Inference #2-This unequal ability of individuals to survive and reproduce will lead to the accumulation of favorable traits in the population over generations
Evidence for evolution
- MRSA-resistant qualities; evolution in bacteria and pathogens
- related species can have characteristics that have underlying similarity resulting from common ancestry
-
skeletons of arms, forelegs, flippers, wings of different mammals are homologous structures that represent variations on structural theme that was present in their common ancestor
Pattern- scientific disciplines:biology, geology, physics and chemistry
