Differences
Race/Gender/Sexuality/Age/Culture/Language
I have had friends with differences in these areas. They are just as good a friend as someone with the same qualities as me. I like to learn about people different than me, so possibly even better friends.
With my ESOL class, I was able to learn a little more about students from different cultures and languages. I want to keep learning about cultures because I think I am limited in that area.
In terms of sexuality, I am probably the one more often different. Probably about 1% are the same. I often connect with these people online as it is easier than trying to find them in public. I try to keep an open mind while learning about other perspectives as well.
Career/Religion/Socioeconomic Status
There are so many careers and I often meet people pursing ones I have no interest in. Getting to know them and why they chose that career path usually makes me more interested and accepting.
I do not know a lot about different religions. I do not know where I stand currently, so I usually do not bring it up. I want to learn more about other religions so I can ensure they feel welcome in my future classroom.
I grew up probably upper-middle-class. I got lucky with this, and I know many others did not have the same experience. Friends growing up were probably similar because I found them often based on location. I know there are many struggles across the groups and I try to be conscious of them.
Those with disabilities (not physical focus)
Close family
Oldest niece (4.5 years younger than me) has struggled with anger
This is more recent, I believe. I think she is similar to her mother, so they get frustrated at each other a lot. She is doing better than a couple of years ago, I think though.
Younger niece (7 years younger) has autism
Earliest diagnosed out of the three. I have helped tutor her before, which was fun. But now that they do unschooling, they are not doing much learning at all.
Nephew (9 years younger) has ADHD
My guess is he has the mixed subtype (learned about in a previous class). He has trouble sitting still and often does not hear what is said.
5th Grade Friend
He's part of the reason I want to be an ESE teacher. He was my best and only consistent friend in 5th grade. I do not know his disabilities. He liked to say "hi" and I got to push him on the swing. Sometimes he got to come out of his chair, and I loved sitting in the grass with him. He has also encouraged me to focus on more inclusive classrooms, as he was included in my general education classroom.
Those with physical disabilities
My mom
She has Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, arthrofibrosis, type 2 diabetes, and probably other things I am forgetting.
I love helping people, and I get to do so a lot with her. It is often just grabbing stuff for her while she is sitting down or helping her get her mobile scooter out of the car. But she is always appreciative.
Despite her hardships, she is the best mother I could ask for.
