Global effects of climate change
Environmental & Physical Impacts
Ocean Changes
Heatwaves cause ocean water to expand and take up more room, while melting ice adds big amounts of new water to the sea. Together, these combined raise sea levels and disrupt the natural currents that balance our planet's temperature.
Ice Loss
Heat waves raise the surrounding temperature above the freezing point, causing surface ice to melt.
Extreme weather(flooding, heat waves, tornadoes) and ocean changes destroy the homes and food sources that animals and plants need to survive. Because these disasters happen so often now, many species cannot recover from them and face the risk of disappearing forever.
Ecosystem and Biodiversity
Human Health & Society
Public Health
Heat waves makes can give people heatstroke and heart problems while also killing crops and drying up drinking water. This leaves people physically weak and vulnerable to disease because they lack the healthy food and clean water needed to stay safe.
Food & Water Security
Floods destroy crops and wash away the healthy soil needed to grow food, which causes food prices to rise, due to the increase in the demand for food, which leads to hunger. At the same time, floodwaters carry trash and sewage into our drinking water, making it unsafe to drink and spreading dangerous diseases.
Economic Consequences
Infrastructure Damage
Heat waves and floods break roads and power lines that weren't designed for these conditions. While at the same time, rising ocean water and salt slowly rot the foundations of buildings and bridges along the coast. To add on Tornadoes cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage each year.
Labor Productivity
Heat waves makes workers tired and sick, forcing them to move slower or take more breaks to stay safe. This leads to less work getting done, which makes it harder for people to earn money in outdoor jobs like farming, which altogether hurts the economy.
Extreme Weather Events
Flooding
Warm air holds more water, which leads to sudden, heavy rain that causes faster and more dangerous flash floods. While at the same time, rising sea levels push more ocean water onto land and stop rainwater from draining away, making floods deeper.
Heat Waves
Haves is a period of a abnormal amount of hot weather that can last for multiple days. The average temperature of a heat wave ranges between 5°C to 10°C higher than the usual maximum temperature for that area.
Tornadoes
Climate change creates more warm, moist air that acts as fuel, causing tornadoes to strike in more powerful groups and stay on the ground longer. It is also pushing these storms into more crowded areas and causing them to happen in the winter when people are less prepared.
