Working memory model evaluation - Coggle Diagram
Working memory model evaluation
Lack of clarity on the central executive
cognitive psychology sugests that it is unsatisfactory and doesnt explain everything
Baddeley- "The CE is the most important but the least understood component of the workng memory
some psychologists believe that the CE may be made of seperate partsmeaning that working memory model hasn't been fully explained
Dual task performance
Performing 2 tasks that requires the same slave systems
These compete
seperate tasks do not compete
Brain scanning studies support WMM
Testing the CE and Baddeley found activity in the left prefrontal cortex
the harder the task more it lights up
Studies on word length effect support the phonological loop
People find it more difficult to remember a long list of words
finite space for rehersal in the articulatory process
The word length effect disappears if they are given an articulatory supression task
This ties up the articulatory process
The space is no more than 2 seconds worth of information so the longer the word the more difficult it is to remember
Clinical evidence
Shallice and Warrington 1970
Provids crucial support by showing that his STM was damaged for verbal info (poor phonological loop)
But it was intact for visual info
STM isnt a single unit and has seperate slave system
