Speech Sound Disorder
Childhood-Onset Fluency Disorder (Stuttering)
Diagnosis:
Onset in early childhood.
Persistent for at least 6 months.
Interferes with social, academic, or occupational functioning
Symptoms:
Repetition of sounds, syllables, or words.
Prolongation of sounds.
Interruptions in speech flow (blocks).
Physical tension or struggle when speaking.
Avoidance of speaking situations due to fear of stuttering.
Disturbance in the normal fluency and time patterning of speech.
Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder
Refers to persistent difficulties in the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication
Symptoms
Challenges in using communication for social purposes (ex: greeting and sharing information)
Difficulty understanding context or rules of conversation (ex: turn-taking, rephrasing when misunderstood)
Problems understanding nonliteral language (ex: idioms, humor and metaphors)
Diagnosis
Impairment in social, academic or occupational functioning
Not better explained by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or other conditions
Symptoms must be present in early development
