How I will implement the Six Principles of Nurture in my classroom:
The classroom offers a safe base
A calm corner in the classroom will offer children a quiet space when needed
Clear daily routines on display for children to see will aid children in knowing what to expect throughout the day
I will support children's development of emotional regulation through the use of puppets, dolls and books, sharing scenarios the children can relate to
All behaviour is communication
I will discuss different emotions with the children and the possible impacts of them to aid their understanding of certain feelings and behaviours
I will support children who are dysregulated by staying calm, showing empathy and actively listening to them
I will foster a safe and supportive environment for the children
The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing
Building positive relationships with the children will allow for conversations about how the children are feeling, and enables them to ask for help when needed
I will celebrate children's achievements, inside and outside of school so that they feel proud of themselves
The importance of transitions in children's lives
I will use storybooks to show children examples of different transitions and how it may make them feel so that they feel they are not alone in their feelings
I will use visual timetables and 'now and next' boards to display transitions throughout the day
I will involve parents in significant transitions to ensure that children feel fully prepared and supported
Language is a vital means of communication
I will teach children emotional language so that they are able to label their emotions and express how they are feeling
I will model the vital social skills needed for positive interactions such as active listening, turn-taking and eye contact (where appropriate).
I will ensure children feel their voices are heard and valued in my classroom
Children's learning is understood developmentally
Classroom tasks will be adapted to the needs and abilities of the children
I will use scaffolding techniques to support children in learning new skills, gradually releasing responsibility as their confidence grows
Formative assessments will ensure I am up to date on the children's level of understanding
