2.1 Types of data
Structured data
-
Structured data is collected in a set way when the exact data is being requested like an online form
A benefit of structured data is that the same data is gathered each time meaning it is easy to store and analyse , data can be processed more efficiently
A drawback of structured data is that the data gathered is fixed meaning that the data may need to be changed to fit a method of collection and it is not flexible so it is limited on how it can be used .
-
Semi-structured data
-
-
A benefit of semi-structured data is that there is no set format allowing variety of different forms the data has some structure to processing is still easy and it has the same benefits as the unstructured and structured
A drawback of semi-structured data is that the data does not have a consistent structure , it is more time consuming and resource intensive to store and process data .
An example of semi-structured data from emails , it is captured by a combination of metadata and unstructured data .
Unstructured
-
Unstructured data is collected from many different formats , types and it never stays the same each time
The benefits of unstructured data is gathered freely as it occurs (there's no limit to pre-set values ) and more data can be gathered because it can include data that cannot be changed to fit in a table format .
The drawbacks of unstructured data is that it requires more before the data can be gathered for analysis , more costly because specialist systems needs to be able to analyse more different forms .
An example of unstructured data is a data from satellite weather systems , it is captured through the use of specialist equipment like radars and radiometers .
