With ordinary verbs

Keep the main verb in base form

Short answers: Yes / No
Yes: Yes, S + aux / be
No: No, S + aux / be + not
Invert the verb and the subject
Structure:
Aux / Be + Subject + Main verb … ?
Rising intonation at the end
Your voice goes up at the end when speaking.
Start with an auxiliary verb or “to be”
Auxiliary verbs: do / does / did / will / can / should / have / has
To be: am / is / are / was / were
Example
With “to be”
Are you a student?
→ Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
With “do / does” (present simple)
Does he play football?
→ Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.
With “did” (past simple)
Did you finish your homework?
→ Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.
With modal verbs (can / will / should…)
Can you swim?
→ Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
Will they come tomorrow?
→ Yes, they will. / No, they won’t.
Negative Yes/No questions
Don’t you like coffee?
→ Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
