Works even better when you have other processes to help it e.g. salt crystallisation and pressure release.
-
-
Salt crystalisation
-
In 26-28 degrees, sodium sulphate and sodium carbonate expands by 300%. This puts pressure on joints (vertical cracks) and bedding planes (horizontal cracks - layers.)
Water evaporation in deserts, leaves behind salt crystal. This puts pressure on the rock and it expands.
-
-
Pressure release
Overlying rocks are removed by erosion. Underlying rocks expand and fracture parallel to the surface.

Chemical weathering

most effective sub-surface since percolating water has gained organic acids from soil and vegetation.

Hydration
When certain minerals absorb water, exoand and change.
