TECHNOLOGY - Coggle Diagram
TECHNOLOGY
DEFINITION BEFORE MODULE
Before reading the module my understanding of technology was anything humans invented to complete a task , this could range from simple structures like a chair or intangible systems like an algorithm
FIRST THINGS THAT COME TO MIND WHEN I HEAR TECHNOLOGY
This is probably because these are some of the most revolutionary and relevant technologies of my time especially in the phone and the internet. one physical and the latter intangible.
INTERNET
CELLPHONES
PLANES
HEADPHONES
The first things that come to mind being mostly hardware align with the notion that most people understand technology as tools or machines (Dyer, 2009)
CURRENT UNDERSTANDING
If i was tasked with defining technology for someone with no course knowledge in my own words I would say technology refers to designed mediums used by humans to achieve outcomes; these mediums can be tangible/intangible and include products (devices or software), processes, and methods.
PROCESSES
SHOWERING, COOKING, CLEANING, STERILIZATION,
PRODUCTS
CARS, STOVE, SHOES, CHAIR, BED, MEDICINE, CUPS, APPS, SOFTWARES, WEBSITES, SEARCH ENGINES
METHODS
FOR METHODS I WILL TIE ALL THE COMPONENTS TOGETHER FOR A CLEARER PICTURE
TECHNOLOGY NEEDS A DESIRED OUTCOME:
LETS SAY I WANT TO EAT SO NUTRITION IS MY DESIRED OUTCOME:
PRODUCTS I CAN USE FOR THIS INCLUDE STOVES, UTENSILS, RECIPE BLOGS
METHODS COULD BE AIR FRYING, BARBECUING , MICROWAVING,
THE PROCESS WOULD BE HOW MICROWAVES WORK
support for definition
My definition aligns with modern ideas of technology that highlight it is not only limited to machinery and artifacts. Isman (2012) argued technology involves not only relations with machines but with the environment and other humans. My definition is broad enough to encompass this while also highlighting process.
WHY WE NEED NEW TECH?
Karatsu (1990, as cited in Li-Hua, 2007) defines technology as "the combination of human understanding of natural laws and phenomena accumulated since ancient times"
This definition highlights that technology is built upon and refined over time. As new technology is available to us we are able to use it as proponents to new technology. Before we got to the car we made wheels.
we need new tech because there are still issues that need solving and new problems arise due to the emergence of new technology , for example the rise of AI also leads to the need for AI detection tools
IDEAS CHANGE
AS I GO THROUGH THE COURSE MATERIAL I QUESTION WHAT ISN'T TECHNOLOGY.
THE DEFINITION FOR TECHNOLOGY IS VERY BROAD AND LEADS ME TO WONDER IS CONTENT TECHNOLOGY? IS ART TECHNOLOGY?
The National Research Council (2012) believes technology is any modification of the natural world made to fulfill human needs or desires
WITH THIS DEFINITION ART WOULD BE CONSIDERED A MODIFICATION TO THE NATURAL WORLD THAT FULLFILLS THE HUMAN DESIRE FOR NOVELTY
WOULD THIS INCLUDE MUSIC? MUSIC CAN BE USED THERAPEUTICALLY , SOME PEOPLE NEED MUSIC TO GET THROUGH THE DAY
WOULD THIS INCLUDE FASHION? ITS A WAY HUMANS EXPRESS THEMSELVES WHICH IS PURPOSEFUL FOR MANY.
