Working towards a sustainable future
Earth's carbon footprint
Climate change is a huge problem in today's world and a key factor to this is the change in the world's atmosphere as carbon dioxide continues make up a bigger and bigger percentage of the atmosphere
Another way to decrease the worlds carbon footprint is to have more plants as they will intake carbon dioxide and release oxygen through gas exchange
I would like to design a product around introducing more plants and greenery into urban settings
According to NASA The 100 highest emitting urban areas account for 18 percent of the worlds carbon emissions
It could be a product aimed at residents in urban areas
This would need to fit into a limited spaces it would be in an urban area so I could make use of vertical space
This product could make use of verticle space to accomodate people's limited room
I could also try to make somthing that can grow foods as a about 2% of the worlds fglobal co2 emmeisons are jsut from the transportation of fruit and veg
The global average of carbon dioxide emission per person, per year is 4.7 tonnes according to the natural history museum
Increasing biodiversity in cities
The other area my research has directed me to is to do something that increases biodiversity in cities as this can be achieved by designing something
Many migratory birds use cities as stop over points for their long journeys
I could design a bird house for migratory birds to take shelter in
Urban areas significantly reduce native species abundance (e.g., 75-92% loss for birds/plants globally)
I could design a very small space for city centres which would double as a seating area and a garden to encourage biodiversity
This could include a tree to provide shade for people in the summer as well as features like a water basin to collect rain water and flowers to provide food for pollinators
This space could be inspired by zen gardens to promote not only biodiversity but also a place for people to relax during work breaks
Urban green spaces are known to mitigate the "urban heat island" effect, lowering temperatures by 1.5–3.5°C, and can reduce noise and air pollution
