Bonding
ionic bonding
Ionic bonding happens when a metal loses electrons and a non-metal gains them. This forms ions, which have opposite charges that attract each other. For example, if one electron is lost and gained, the metal becomes a +1 ion and the non-metal becomes a –1 ion. These charged ions join together to make a strong solid compound, like salt.

covalent bonding
Covalent bonding happens when two non-metal atoms share electrons. They share enough electrons so both can fill their outer shell. This creates small molecules, like water (H₂O) or carbon dioxide (CO₂).

a stimulus is a change in the environment or example if you touch something hot or if you eat something hot...

Electrons go around the nucleus in shells, which are often drawn as circles with little dots on them. Each shell can only hold a certain number of electrons. The first shell holds up to 2 electrons, and the next two shells can hold up to 8 electrons each (2, 8, 8).
An ion is an atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons, which means the number of electrons is no longer equal to the number of protons.
