The Literal Adventures of Leo: An Idiom Story
1.The Storm
Leo and Sarah are looking out the window at a heavy rainstorm.
Sarah: "Wow, it’s really raining cats and dogs out there!"
Leo: (Looking worried, opening the door) "Wait! I have to go save them! Are the kittens okay? Do the puppies have umbrellas?"
Sarah: "Leo, wait! It just means it's raining very hard!"
2.The Math Test
They are sitting in class. Leo is sweating over a math paper.
Sarah: (Whispering) "Don’t worry, Leo. This test is a piece of cake."
Leo: (Looking under his desk and inside his bag) "Where? Did the teacher give you dessert? I’m hungry, but I don't see any frosting."
4.The Expensive Gift
They are at a mall looking at a high-tech drone.
Leo: "I want this so much, but it's $500!"
Sarah: "Yeah, that definitely costs an arm and a leg."
Leo: (Backing away from the store) "That is a terrible deal. I prefer to keep my limbs, thank you very much."
5.Under the Weather
The next day, Leo calls Sarah on the phone. He sounds tired.
Sarah: "Are you coming to the park?"
Leo: "No, I'm feeling a bit under the weather."
Sarah: "Oh, I'm sorry you're sick."
Leo: "I'm not sick, I'm just confused. I went outside with an umbrella, but the clouds are still above me. I am always under the weather!"
3.Time Flies
Leo: (Looking up at the sky, confused) "I didn't see any clocks with wings. Was it a fast bird?"
Sarah: "We’ve been talking for hours! Time flies when you’re having fun."
They are sitting in the park. Sarah looks at her watch.
6.The Realization
Leo is reading a big book titled "English Idioms." He smiles.
Leo: "Aha! I finally see the light!"
Sarah: "You mean you finally understand?"
Leo: "Yes! And no, I don't mean there is a lightbulb in my eyes. I actually mean I get it!"
Sarah: "Perfect. You’re on the ball, Leo!"
Leo: (Looking down at his feet) "...Don't start with me again."
