THE LIBERAL AND THE CONSERVATIVE PARTIES
After Prince Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria withdrew from public life for many years
During this time, British politics changed. Two main parties emerged:
the Liberals, led by William Gladstone
the Conservatives, led by Benjamin Disraeli
Disraeli was Prime Minister twice
His government improved living conditions for workers
with laws on housing , public health, and factory work
In foreign policy, he focused on protecting Bristish interest
especially the route to India through the Suez Canal
Gladstone was Prime Minister four times
He introduced important reforms in education, trade unions, and voting rights
Education became compulsory, trade unions were legalised, and more men were allowed to vote
He also supported Irish Home Rule
but Ireland gained self-government only after World War I
Britain expanded its empire in the late 19th century
In South Africa, conflicts with the Boers led to the Anglo-Boer Wars
which ended in 1902 with a British victory
In 1887, Queen Victoria became Empress of India
India was very important for trade and power, but British rule damaged its traditional economy
The Victorian Age ended in 1901 with Queen Victoria's death
She was remembered as a symbol of stability and continuity
and her death marked the end of an important era in British history
