Addressing the needs of the elderly
Mobility related
- old people often struggle with moving around freely in both their homes and in public spaces such as parks or urban areas
Standing up and sitting down
More supportive chair or sofa
support frame to help people interacting with chairs
Design a bench for parks which is more accessible
Problems using bathrooms / toilets
Difficulty getting out of bed
Old people may struggle to get in and out of cars
Old people not walking around as much
- a lot of elderly people's health is made worse by a lack of exercise due to the pain it comes with
Design a green area specifically for old people to use
Difficulty using household items
- people or are very old living by themselves may struggle to use household items due to weakness or tremors in their hands
Kettles
Lighter design using modern materials
Make a version which is safe to touch when boiled
Make a kettle which is very stable using weight distribution
Difficulties opening lids
Design a device to open lids
create a new type of lid that is easier to open
Cutlery - Old people may struggle to hold very unbalanced cutlery due to a weaker grip
I could design a range of utensils which used ergomics to be easier to hold
Focus on weight distribution and shape
Social isolation and loneliness
- this is a significat problem in the elderly population as alot of people end up alone due to things ike the death of thier partners and friends aswell as less of an incetive to go out due to the difficuletes that come with it
I could design a communal area for the elderly
This could be focues on either an outdoors space or and indor area
I could implement design features to encourage face to
face contact and social interction
It would be important to ensure this area was accesible to the elderly so they would actually want to spend time there
17 - 20% of people aged 75+ experience loneliness in the UK
Design inspiration
John Morden centre - this building won the RIBA sterling prize in 2023 for creating a community hub for the elderly specific focusing on social isolation and loneliness
OXO good grips - makes kitchware products with a focus on being accessible to all ages and people no matter their handicaps
I would be inspired by Brutalist buildings combining with a lot of greenery for my communal area as this may help with the mental health of the people using the area as well as maybe allowing for lower construction costs
