        Thus, even while developing countries might enjoy absolute economic gain, they suffer relative loss; and the gap between rich countries and poor countries widens.
        
        These patterns, of course, were first established in colonial times. Yet, even with formal decolonisation, the systematically unequal relations have persisted.
