Comparison of US and UK policies
Welfare and public services
On the US front, the democrats expand many welfare programs as i have previously mentioned, they support things like government intervention with healthcare as well like medicare
However with republicans they try and reduce welfare dependcany due to their policies and beliefs, moreover they prefer private healthcare systems
Labour: they have a very strong support for the NHS, this might be due to starmer and his connection not just their political beliefs, of cousre still being core, they also make sure to expand who the welfare state can get to
The tories also support the NHS in principle which can be seen as butskelite politics, something where both labour and the tories believe is good, hwoeverthey want to control costs and somewhat have a private health preferance
Political system and party policy
overall the US uses a bi cameral sytem which consits of two houses/chambers, the HOR and the senate, the HOR has 435 members and the senate has 100, the fedaral system that the US has limits radical change to keep the strength of the consitution. Moreover they have a strong idealogical identity due to how their system works and the atmosphere of it
on the side of the UK we cna also see they are bicameral, the House of common and the lOrds, the commons is far more powerful than the lords. they are different to the US bedcause they are a multi party system with things like the greens, reform and the lib dems on top of the tories and labour. Parties will also adopt more prqgmatic policies because of the debates that can occur and things such as backbench rebellions
Equality and social policy
democrats have a very clear monority rights support, they have been known to field far more minority groups in their party overr the republicans, they are pro choice on abortion as well as having strong LGBT protections
Republicans are of course socially conservative, they believe in many catholic and strong christian views, they famously have limtied abortion access by giving the desision to the states, and finally they emphasise traditional values as they are ones who try and keep change away
Labour: they relate to the democrats and are very progessive in their apporach to minority rights both racially and LGBT
they tories of course are more conservative than labour however they are still more liberal than republicans as Cameron famously legalised same sex marriage during his tenour, however they do have some internal division on some points, this can be becuause of how they are more braod church
Economic policy and the role of the state within it US
when it comes to economic policy there are some differences, the democratic government during the 2021-2024 term prefered government intervention with the economy whereas the republicans would have left it alone more
democrats prefer to tax the wealthy and support the smaller buisnesses which was something kamala harris tried to focus on during the 2024 elections
democrats will also put more public spending on the welfare state like with obamacare and medicaid during Obama's time in office
One the other side we have republicans, they will lower tax rates on the wealthy and especially big buisnesses and they prefer things like this
there is also less overall regulation as well when it comes to both of these aspects
We can see examples of this with Trump and his deregulation policies and his tax cuts
Economic policy and the role of the state within it UK
On the UK side we can see that Labour focuses on a mixed economy, they are seen as a centre left political party
they aim to reduce inequality as much as they can within their time in power, moreover they tax the wealthy and big buisnesses far heavier than a more right leaning party
on the other hand we have the Conservative party, they are a centre right party, they believe in a free market economy and limited state intervention, they also prefer low taxation just like the republican party, they also control public spending
