      - When the portly gentlemen arrive looking for money for charity, Scrooge says that "its enough for a man to understand his own business and not to interfere with other peoples"
        
        This reflects the capitalist ideology which Dickens was highly critical of. Instead he believed in charity and helping those in need
        
        This capitalist ideology leads to isolation as it means that people should only focus on themselves and not take interest in others
        
        Scrooge uses the word business to talk of a persons life. This suggests that Scrooges life was business as he is noted to be and "Excellent man of business"
        
        Scrooges life was money and greed but, despite it motivating him, he was never satisfied
    - - "secret and self-contained and solitary as an oyster"
    - - "Nobody ever stopped him in the street to say, my dear Scrooge, how are you?"
        
        Scrooge purposefully isolated himself from society and this same behaviour is mirrored through the people around him. The fact that people no longer try and greet him shows the extent to which he has isolated himself
    - - Through this we are shown that since his childhood Scrooge was "neglected"> This clearly had a big impact on him as he "sobbed" and "wept to see his poor forgotten self as he used to be"

    - - Dickens believed in Christianity and this is present in the novel
    - - Dickens was critical of this
      - Dickens believed that being a good person was less about going to Church, and more about doing good deeds
      - "There are some upon this of yours... who lay claim to know us, and who do their deeds of passion, pride, ill-willed, hatred, envy, bigotry, and selfishness in our name, who are as strange to us and all our kith and kin, as if they had never lived"
        
        Scrooge believed that the Ghost was God, or related to God
        
        The Ghost is saying that, although people call themselves Christians and know God, they act in ways that contradict Christian beliefs and "what they lay claim to"
        
        The listing of the sins builds up on each other, creating an overwhelming effect on the reader. Through the voice of the Ghost Dickens hints that Christianity does not necessarily mean morality
    - - contains many moral messages
      - It gives Dickens a platform to voice his socialist ideas and to also show the immorality in Victorian society
        
        He was incredibly critical of the laws created about the poor. He had lost all hope in democracy
        
        Policies such as the poor law 1834 which created union workhouses which were cruel unforgiving places which Dickens believed to be completely unethical
      - In the Victorian era morality and philanthropy were linked and many believed that it was a moral duty to contribute to charity, especially as Christians
        
        Contrastingly others believed that philanthropy actually made poverty worse
        
        Thomas Malthus theory
        
        Dickens disagreed with this
        
        This theory states that if you give more resources to the poor, they will simply use the resources to have more children rather than increase their quality of life
    - - Marley shows the eternal consequences of living an immoral life
        
        This is grounded in Christian doctrine
      - Marleys Ghost has been trapped in purgatory
        
        He explains that if a spirit does not go forth in life, it is condemed to do so after death.
        
        Because of his actions during his life, he is 'doomed to wander the earth'.
        
        'phantoms wandering hither and thither in restless haste and moaning as they went'
        
        The audible moans of the phantoms suggest the depth of their suffering
        
        Their suffering could even humanise them, in a way in which another sense confirms what Scrooge is seeing with his eyes verifies the experience
        
        He is a realisation of the Christian ideology that if you live immorally in life, you will be eternally damned.
        
        Victorian society was incredibly religious and so Marleys fate would have resonated with many of the Victorian readers
        
        Marleys Ghost is a deterrent, not just for Scrooge but towards the read. It confirms beliefs or even fears which they may already have
    - - The Ghost shows Scrooge the effects of his death.
        
        They feel relief and joy because of it
        
        the three thieves are used to illustrate a cycle of immorality by profit off of Scrooge. His wicked and cruel behaviour in life has let the same legacy after his death and because of this, others such as the thieves believe it is justice for them to mimic that same behaviour
        
        Mrs Dilber argues 'Every person has a right to take care of themelves' because "he always did"
        
        The short 3 word sentece "he always did" expresses a stark truth and the lack of empathy people have for him
        
        Dickens uses this to exhibit to the audience the consequences of bad behaviour and shows the reader how immorality breeds immorality
        
        It is everyones duty to live a moral life, not just for their own sake and their legacy but also for the sake of others.
        
        They believe stealing from a dead man isn't immoral or unethical and is instead "a judgment on him"
