stewardship
Altamaha River Watershed
Water Quality
Largest in Georgia, third largest in U.S.
Altamaha river Drains into Pacific ocean
Land usage- 5% urban/built up, 50% agricultural, 45% evergreen and mixed forest
Doctors Creek
has been designated for fishing. impairments for dissolved oxygen and pathogens with plan in place for restoration.
Jones Creek
Impairments- fecal coliform bacteria (2007, 2023) dissolved oxygen (2022)
origins of fecal coliform bacteria - human and animal feces, lives in warm blooded animals' intestines
two possible causes- septic tank failure and sewage contamination
two prevention strategies for septic tank failure- pump tank on schedule, avoid flushing harmful stuff like meds and chemicals
two prevention strategies for sewage contamination- avoid fats, oils, chemicals, or trash in drains. Regularly maintenance sewage lines, repair/ upgrade as needed.
Restoration
Bacteria indicator supplement (specific action aimed at addressing and environmental issue) shows how recreators like swimmers are protected and helps to designate bodies of water for particular usage. It also provides documentation for review and education like this assignment for example. (Georgia Environmental Protection Division, 2022).
Restoration Plans-The Georgia Environmental Protection Division made these extra documents to explain how they worked out the numbers for fecal coliform bacteria (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2023).
Why care?
Streams nestled in our neighborhoods serve as indicators of environment health.
One of the reasons testing and processes made for making the public aware of acceptable activities. For example, to avoid ingesting water that is contaminated, fishing can be acceptable as signs for swimming is not.
