For the two images at the front of the map, I opted for images of Guillermo Gomez Pena. Pena is a good example of someone who displays a connection between the four themes I have chosen to sum up Latin American Studies (Gender, Race/Culture, Resistance, and Colonialism). He defies gender norms as someone who identifies as a male but does not always express himself in a traditionally masculine way. His piece that I highlighted on the left, where he is in the cage, is an example of highlighting both race and resistance. It is supposed to bring to light how people gawk at indigenous people like Pena himself and treat them as outsiders. This (like much of his performance art as he explains) is an example of resistance as he is trying to make a point and change the way people think of things, and fight back against racial oppresion in society. This piece can also be interpreted as fighting back against colonialism as Mexicans have been colonized in the past (although this is likely my weakest point since it can be argued that in today's society colonialism is frequently replaced by racism, and is more subtle). I would say the main connection between these four is that resistance is the way of fighting back against the problems created by the other three.
