Right on the cusp of leaving, his raven returns with a missive- they know through the raven that he has found a match, and now that he is healed, he is to return at once with his quarry. He breaks down, torn between killing the girl that saved his life, and killing his raven and going on the run, dooming his hostage within the capitol to death as well.
        
        He poisons her, and when she has woken, they are on their way to his capitol. She hates him, not understanding, and he grey walls, trying to steel himself against this. It clearly tortures him at night, when she fakes sleep and he stares out dramatically, murmuring to his raven if he think's she's really asleep. eventually, she catches snippets enough to piece it together, and she gives him options, in the last town before the border.
        
        take a false match to kill the king (this would work only until the tests in the capitol, as there is no way for the talisman to work in the country, but would allow her to go free, him to find out that other knights had been sent, and the best match taken to the king. bringing an only sort of match would keep him in questioned graces, as they saw through the raven that he had a /perfect/ match, possibly dooming his hostage and himself. There is no perfect match in this town, and he has already sent a message stating that he was near the border and would be returning soon, leaving them out from under surveillance temporarily.
        
        or haha lets overthrow the king. take her in, break her out last second, kill the king. Leaves them in the middle of a hostile court though.
        
        doom the hostage under the idea that as he has not seen them in years, that they may not be alive, a ghost haunting his conscience. she's not great at scrying, but he has something of theirs, and it does show that the hostage has been long dead. Blind the raven with a spell, letting him keep his companion. just let the king die and let the heirless kingdom fall to its chaos.
        
        he doesn't like the idea, abandoning his oath to serve the nation, and his guilt nor grief is little assuaged (hostage died for nothing because he chose to become a knight.) brings up the question how a match is detected anyways. King's blood is in talisman like a phylactery- testing by in town physician between his and hers shows match- related. She's royal, woohoo. she doesn't believe it at first. doesn't want to be related to him, or from the country. his oath now means putting her on the throne, and convinces her she can change things that she does not like once she is queen, that he doesn't like it either after time in the world outside, and that he'll be at her side the whole way through if it means that they make it better.
      - wagon is covert- supplies within surround an empty cage meant to hold his match. He keeps it outside cities and travels in on foot while searching, tending his horse every morning.
  - - - cannot provide an heir because someone in the court is a traitor and is playing the long game by having sterilized the king through the king's physician, as well as poisoning him into heart failure. this is it's own plot, playing out as the time goes. makes his bastard Our Princess the only even remotely legitimate heir.
- - - - a select few are chosen for their exceeding standards to serve the royals and high nobles- these ones are not allowed any contact with their families post education and socially die, taking on a new identity, and are assigned as children of their mentors. due to identity scouring ritual clothing, to the public, these mages appear as their own caste, hidden within the capitol and dispersed where need be. The small children are assumed to be kept out of sight, unless they show aptitude to serve early.
