Thermodynamics

Types of Variables:
Intensive: Doesn't depend on amount of matter of system. Eg- Temperature, Pressure
-

-
Types of System:
-
-
Isolated System: The system in which there is no exchange of energy or matter with the surroundings.
Some Imp. Terms
System: The set of molecules where macro properties like volume, pressure, heat and internal energy are under observation
Surrounding: The set of molecules with which the molecules of system interact is called surrounding.
Thermodynamic Process: The state of any system changes at particular condition through a process called Thermodynamic Process. This system is in equilibrium:
-
Thermal Equilibrium: No heat exchange, i.e. Temperature of system= Temperature of surrounding.
Heat: The energy released or absorbed by system due to temperature difference with surrounding or any other system.
If it is gained by system then +ve, if lost by system then -ve.
Internal Energy: It is microscopic variable of system which determines the thermodynamics of the system.
If I.E. of the system increases, then it will be +ve. If decreases, then -ve.
First Law of Thermodynamics: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be converted from one form to another.
In a system, the heat supplied is used to increase internal energy or to do work.
The amount of heat energy received by system will be equal to change in I.E. of system and workdone by system on surrounding.
Branch of physics in which we study about heat and temperature and conversion of heat energy in another form of energy.
Heat Energy: The energy transferred from higher temperature body (system) to lower temperature body is called heat energy.
Thermal Equilibrium: The system will not exchange heat energy with any other system or surrounding.
or
If temperature of a system is constant, the system is said to be in Thermal Equilibrium.
Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics: This law states that if two systems are separately in thermal equilibrium with third system, then those two system will be in Thermal Equilibrium with each other.
Work: If work is done by the system, then workdone will be -ve, if workdone is on the system, then it'll be +ve.
Specific Heat Capacity: The amount of heat required to increase the temperature of any substance by 1 degree Celsius.
Heat Capacity: The amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of any substance by 1 degree Celsius.
Molar Specific Heat Capacity: The amount of heat energy required to increase the temperature of 1 mole substance by 1 degree Celsius.
