Info relayed to brain, motor information sent back down spinal cord along pelvic nerve efferents
Causes rectal wall to contract slightly, proximal part of internal sphincters briefly relaxes, allows part of stool to come down and inside anal canal is sensory epithelium - detect whether gas, liquid, solid, stool sampling
