Inflation Techniques:
Minimum Occlusion Volume (MOV):
Inflate until no leak → withdraw air until small leak on inspiration → reinflate slightly to seal.
Advantage: reduces aspiration & unplanned extubation
Minimum Leak Technique (MLT):
Inflate until leak stops → remove small air until small leak heard on inspiration.
Advantage: reduces mucosal injury & mobilizes secretions.
Key Steps & Rationales:
Assess for cuff leakage: audible leak, patient vocalizing, pilot balloon deflated, ventilator alarms.
Assess inadequate ventilation: high PaCO₂, low PaO₂, tachycardia, restlessness.

Measuring Cuff Pressure:
With sphygmomanometer: connect to pilot balloon via stopcock, inject air, read pressure.
With manometer: connect directly, read pressure.
