Tracheal Tube
1-Definition:
-Insertion of flexible tube (ETT) via nose or mouth into trachea.
-Attempts should last ≤ 15–30 seconds.
2-Types of ETT:
Disposable (silicon) / reusable (rubber).
Cuffed / non-cuffed.
Single / double lumen.
With dorsal lumen for secretion suction.
3-Purposes of ETT Insertion:
Maintain patent airway.
Reduce aspiration risk (cuff seals trachea).
Allow deep tracheal suction.
Enable mechanical ventilation.
Route for emergency medications.
5-Indications:
General surgery ventilation.
Foreign body removal.
Airway protection (e.g., GI bleed).
Aspiration pneumonia.
Airway visualization.
Post-major surgery.
Respiratory support (e.g., pneumonia, neurological disorders).
Deep sedation.
High oxygen concentration needed.
8. Key Equipment:
ETT, laryngoscope, suction, Ambu bag, stylet, bite-block, syringe for cuff.
PPE, pulse oximeter, CO₂ monitor, Magill forceps.
6. Contraindications for Nasal Intubation:
Facial fractures.
Suspected basal skull fracture.
Post-transnasal hypophysectomy.
